Each year, students at Highlands elementary participate in 'learning service' within the community. This year, Jana and the 4th grade class became acquainted with the Free Wheel Mission here in Boise. Founded in 2001, Free Wheelchair Mission is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs for the impoverished disabled in developing nations. Settled in Irvine, California, FWM works around the world in partnership with a vast network of humanitarian, faith-based and government organizations, sending wheelchairs to hundreds of thousands of disabled people, providing not only the gift of mobility, but of dignity, independence, and hope. The kids not only learned of the international need for these wheelchairs, they also decided to fundraise to provide two wheelchairs to someone in need. As a part of science, they will also learn about the engineering and mechanics of how they are put together. This is one of the first projects for Highlands students to reach out globally.
